One week to go...

Hello Families,

Can you believe there is one week of school left? Wow, it has gone by fast. But I have really enjoyed getting to know your kids and helping them learn as much as they can. I have really been lucky to have such a great group of families to work with as well. I have received exceptional support from parents, which is a critical partnership for the development of students. The frequency of parents volunteering to help out in the room and go on field trips has also been unbelievable. Special thanks to Jodi Pope and Susan Paisley who have been working the room for an entire afternoon each week. Thank you to all for your help and support this year.

Ice Cream Social: On Tuesday, 5th graders will have an Ice Cream Social and get a chance to sign yearbooks in the multi-purpose room. Those that did not order yearbooks, will get a chance to create a signing book, and still get to collect autographs from their friends.

Portfolios: On Wednesday, your students will bring home a portfolio of their best work over the last semester. Please look for this to come home on Wednesday, and I would recommend saving this in some box. It can be really fun to look back at their work, when they are an adult. On Wednesday, I will show them a folder of work I did in fifth grade.

Clean-Up: On Thursday, students will clean out their desks, and we will clean the room as a group. Students should bring a paper bag to bring home the contents of their desk.

Friday Half Day: Remember that Friday, the last day of school, is a half day. So remember your kids will be coming home earlier than they normally would.

Report Cards: Students will bring home their report cards on Friday. Please look for them to come home in their manila envelopes.

Students will likely not have homework this week, but if they have missing work to complete, they should complete it as soon as possible. Students with work outstanding will be spending recess time this final week inside to complete it until they are finished.

As always, let me know if you have questions or concerns.

Thanks,
Scott

Holiday Weekend Update

Hello Families,

I hope your children are enjoying their day off from school today. Here are a couple of updates for next week.

Fifth graders will be having their end-of-year Ice Cream Social and yearbook signing on Tuesday, June 5,  from 2:45-3:45.  We are looking for parent volunteers who would be willing to serve the ice cream for this celebration.  If you are interested in helping out, let me know and we will coordinate the roles among all three classrooms and get back to you.

Thank you for all of the volunteer efforts you have given during this past year.  I am most appreciative!

Biographies: Your students have been working hard on their biography project the last couple of weeks. At this point, they should be ready to give their speech on Tuesday. If they are bringing anything for a costume (optional), they should bring that on Tuesday as well. Please have your student practice for you at home over the weekend.

Writing: We have been working on Persuasive Writing and Advertisements. Students have been working on coming up with an advertisement for a product, and then writing about why people would want to buy their product based on specific persuasive strategies. We typed final copies in the computer lab on Thursday, and will put together the complete product early this week. These have looked very nice so far, please ask your student what their advertisement is for, and how they are trying to market their product.

Math: Students were supposed to turn in a signed Unit 7 Math Test on Thursday, but ultimately, I have many students who have this down as missing work right now. Please ask your student about it. We are concluding Unit 8 this week, and will likely take the written assessment for it. On Thursday, we learned about figuring out the % discount if you were at a store. You can ask them a problem like this at home, and they should be able to tell you how to figure it out.

Example: A pair of shoes cost $60, would you rather use a coupon that says 'Take $15 off' or one that says 'Take 30% off' ?     (Answer: You'd rather have the 'Take 30% off' coupon because it would be $42, with the 'Take $15 off' coupon it would be $45. )

Social Studies: We have discussed the events that lead up to the start of the Revolutionary War, such as the Boston Massacre, Boston Tea Party and the Continental Congress. Students will be putting their knowledge to use this week to finish up the unit.

Health:  We will dive back into some health concepts this week, including mini-lessons on the truth about Drugs, being a smart consumer, and the circulatory system.

As always, let me know if you have questions or comments.

Thanks,
Mr. Norman

Sunday Update

Hey Families,

Here are some updates before we go into a short week. Remember that we don't have school on Friday, or the following Monday because of the holiday weekend.

Writing: Your student has begun work on a persuasive piece of writing in the form of an advertising pitch. They have started to create their own advertisement of some form, and will write a 3 paragraph paper that states their claim of why consumers should or need to buy their product. Please ask your student to give you the details of this creative project. I have seen some really great ideas so far. We will devote some class time for continued work on this project, but your student may need to bring their work home at some point. I will keep you posted.

Literacy: Your students were assigned a Biography Project last week. They will read a biography of a famous person, take notes on the critical events of the person's life, then form a speech where they pretend to be that person. We have been going the through the process during class, but your students will need to have their book read, taken their notes, and formulated their speech by next Thursday, May 24th. Then on the following Tuesday we will start giving the speeches. We spoke about how important this due date is, and how they wouldn't want to have to think about finishing it over a holiday weekend. There were some questions about whether students needed to dress up like their subject. It is completely optional and will not affect their grade on the project. Please do not spend any money looking for a costume.

Math: With our disjointed schedule lately, it may have been hard for you to tell where we're at in math. You just recently signed your student's Unit 9 Test, tomorrow they will have another to bring home for corrections and your signature (Unit 7). This week we will continue with our work in Unit 8, focusing mainly on multiplying fractions. Your students have the answer key for this one, so you can remind them to check their work for accuracy, and come in with questions.

Social Studies: We have been learning about the important events leading up to the Revolutionary War. Students will get a chance to do some more research this week. Please ask your students what they have learned so far, and lend any expertise you may have at home.

Crazy Hair Day is this Thursday! (can't wait to see what some of these kids will look like)

Also on Thursday is 5th Grade Field Day in the afternoon. Tell your son or daughter to be careful with your crazy hair that it doesn't impede their aerodynamics out on the field.

As always, let me know if you have questions or comments.

Thanks,
Mr. Norman

Saturday Update

Hey Families,

Here are some updates...

We are all done with our standardized tests! On the whole, I think the class did very well with these.

Social Studies: Students did some research on a specific aspect of the either the New England, Middle, or Southern Colonies. They will present to their classmates this upcoming week. Please ask your student what they learned.

Math: Students should have already brought their Unit 9 Test last week for your signature and to make any corrections. We are still working on finishing up Unit 7, and will likely be concluding it this week.

Writing: We have been working on some specific writing conventions, and will shift into our next writing project, Persuasive Writing. In addition, students have still been completing weekly writing assignments. This week's topic was "Create your own superhero." Please ask your student about their superhero.

As always, let me know if you have questions or concerns.

Thanks,
Mr. Norman

Tuesday Update

Hey Families,

Sorry I am tardy with my update. Anyway, here are some updates relating to what we've been doing and what is coming up.

Last Test! We will take our Math MAP Test this Thursday, and this will be our last of the computer tests. Please help your student get some good sleep going into Thursday and encourage he or she to do his or her best.

Social Studies: We have started discussing the Jamestown, Plymouth and first colonies. Students will get a chance to do some research on a select region of colonizers, and present to their classmates.
We will discuss the impact of these first settlers and their effect on the United States today. Please ask your student what they have learned and lend any expertise you can give to him or her.

Math: Students received their Unit 9 Tests today with their scores. They are due back with corrections and signature from a parent by next Monday. As a part of going back to Unit 7, we have been working hard with negative numbers, and learning how to add and subtract using negative numbers.

Writing: During writing lately, students have been focusing on the conventions of word choice, correct use of apostrophes, and subject-verb agreement. I will be looking for a concentration on these elements in their weekly writing assignments. Remind your student to take his or her time and proofread his or her work before turning it in.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks,
Mr. Norman

Hello Families!

Hello Everybody,

I hope your kids are enjoying their day off today. Here are some updates, including yet another update on testing.

MCA: We will be taking the Science MCA tomorrow afternoon and Wednesday afternoon of this upcoming week.  We have been preparing for this test by reviewing many of the units that students have completed over the past few years.

MAP: Sadly, due to scheduling, we will be taking the MAP Reading Test on Thursday afternoon of this week. Then the following week, we will take the MAP Math Test on Thursday, May 10th.

We have spent some time in class discussing the volume of testing toward the end of the year, and students even elicited my own opinion of it. I tried to help them realize the importance of trying their best within our current system, even though it does seem like a lot of testing for them. Please give your student a healthy amount of encouragement in preparation for these tests.

Social Studies: Thank you for your help in assisting your students' completion of their Explorer Final Project. For the rest of the year, we will be getting into issues of early colonial settlement, the Revolutionary War, immigration and slavery. As always please lend any insight to your student at home about any of these topics.

Math: Due our complicated testing schedule the past few weeks, our math has been a little sporadic, but look for a little more normalcy in the homework routine. Your students just completed unit 9, and this week will be coming home with their written test for that unit for corrections and your signature. We will then be getting back into Unit 7 to get into negative numbers. We will then do a shortened version of Unit 8 on Multiplying Fractions, followed by Unit 10 on Algebraic Concepts.

Writing: We have been concentrating lately on specific capitalization rules, and will start this week clarifying specific terms of often confused words/phrases. (For example: all ready vs. already) Please ask your student to share what they have learned. Give he or she a pop quiz if you get a chance.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks,
Mr. Norman

5th Grade Update

Testing: The class took the first part of the MCA Math Test today on the computer and will complete it tomorrow. Then we will take the MCA Science portion next week. Then, we actually slide right into the testing time for the Spring MAP Tests, starting with reading first, and then math. We have doing some different classroom activities to get pumped up and celebrate the completion of these tests, including a popular dance. Your student can explain more for you. Anyway, please help them get the appropriate amount of rest needed to show all of their knowledge on these days.

International Night is this Friday!! Although, I have never been to it, I have heard from many that this is a really fun night with tons of different things for kids and parents to take part in, complete with numerous delicious food choices. I will be at the ticket booth to start the night, but I am looking forward to circulating throughout afterward. Thank you to all who have donated a giftcard to our classroom raffle item. We have created a very nice prize for some lucky winner! There are also some great silent auction items, including a basketball party for your student and their friends with me! (I am hoping somebody puts in a bid on it. I might be embarrassed when it goes for fifty cents.)

Thanks again to all the parents who joined us last Friday on our trip to the Northwest Trading Post! It is remarkable to go on a field trip and be able to take eight parent chaperones with us. It really was an enjoyable time for the class. A sincere thank you to Lisa, Luann, Erik, Paula, Martha, Jodi, Amy and Sue!

Science: We are continuing with our brief crash course of review concepts in Science. This week, we will review electrical circuits and some simple machines like levers, wheels & axles, pulleys, and inclined planes. Please lend your student any knowledge you have at home of any of these concepts.

Literacy: We have been talking a lot about making inferences when you read a text. Have your student explain to you what an inference is and give you a example. We have practiced reading them and writing our scenarios where someone else would have to infer something.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns...

Thanks,
Mr. Norman

Hello Parents,

I wanted to alert you to an important update. As I was checking the testing schedule yesterday, I noticed a miscommunication in our MCA dates for next week. We will be taking the Math MCA Test on Monday and Tuesday of next week, not Tuesday and Wednesday as I had originally told you. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Please remember to let your students get plenty of rest this weekend.

Thanks,
Mr. Norman

Saturday, April 14, 2012

Hello 5th Grade Families

I hope you are all having a good weekend. Here are some important updates...

This upcoming Tuesday and Wednesday, we will be taking the Reading MCA tests on paper in the room.

Then the following week, on Tuesday, April 24th and Wednesday, April 25th, we will take the Math MCA test on the computer.

Finally, on either May 1st or 2nd, we will take the Science MCA test, which is also on the computer.

In class, we have discussed the importance of showcasing all that you have learned on these tests. We have also spoken about how getting enough rest and eating right can positively effect your results.  Please help your students by getting some good sleep over this weekend to build up a base for the week. Also, make sure your fifth grader gets a good breakfast on testing days. After having kids reflect on previous tests, many of them cited being too hungry, or not feeling well on the day of the test as a factor in how well they did. That being said, please encourage them to do their best without putting any undo pressure on them.

Because of our upcoming testing, you should expect to see very little homework over the next couple of weeks. As mentioned before, we are also temporarily taking a break from spelling and word work.

Health: Over the last week, we have been going through our 'Growing Up' unit. While it can be an uncomfortable subject for students to discuss, I have been impressed with the collective maturity level when discussing these topics. We will conclude this unit early next week. Please remind your students that they should feel comfortable to come to you with any lingering questions.

Science: We having been doing a crash course review of science concepts students have learned over the past few years, such as the water cycle, and electrical circuits, as well as touching on some newer topics like erosion and simple machines. Please ask your students to explain some of these concepts at home.

Field Trip on Friday: Just a reminder that we will be going to the Northwest Fur Trade Post on Friday. Thank you to those who have volunteered to join us. We have a nice group of chaperones that will allow for some small groups on the trip, which is always more fun.

Thanks,

Mr. Norman

Thursday Update

Hello Families,

I know it's only Thursday, but here's an update of what we have going on....

First of all, a big thanks to the volunteers who helped out and each ran a math game at our Math Extravaganza today! Thank you Luann Quayle, Gale Mason-Chagil, April Brandt and Heidi Brezinka. Your time is much appreciated. I know the kids all had a lot of fun.

Test Dates: Here are the dates for our class.

MCA Reading Tests on Tuesday, April 17th and Wednesday, April 18th.

MCA Math Tests on Monday, April 23th and Tuesday, April 24th.

MCA Science Test on either Tuesday, May 1st or Wednesday, May 2nd.

Science: Starting next week, as a preparation for the MCA Science test, we will be taking a look at some of the science concepts students learned during the science curricula at earlier grade levels. Because some of these concepts are revisited on the test, we will be doing somewhat of a 'crash course' review unit. We will be utilizing some very thought provoking simulations and activities to do this in class and in a limited amount of time. Please ask your students what they have learned, or re-learned in class.

Spelling: Due to upcoming testing and complex scheduling, we have decided to skip spelling for the near future. We will likely pick it back up at the end of the month.

Social Studies: For their final project in our Explorer Unit, students had a choice to complete a detailed timeline, or write an essay based on their research. Based on their selection, they have directions of exactly how to complete their project. Due to the level of quality time I have asked them to put into this project, I have decided that it is due on April 27. I have reminded them that a project like this needs them to think about their time management, so as to not leave the whole thing until the night before.

International Night: This festival is on Friday, April 27th. I have been told it is a lot fun for families to attend, with activities and games around the school. Our fifth grade class is still taking 'gift card' donations to be compiled as a raffle prize. Among silent auction items is a "Basketball Party with Mr. Norman," The winner will get to bring 7 or 8 friends to play games with me after school either in the gym or outside, complete with pizza and treats.  If you haven't already, please mark your calendars for this night.

As always, let me know if you have questions or concerns.

Thanks,
Mr. Norman

Monday Update

Hello Families,

Here is an update on what we have been up to Room 116, and some upcoming events.

Math: We are continuing with Unit 9, and currently, we are learning how to calculate the area of rectangles, triangles and parallelograms.  Your students do not have answer keys like they have in the past. As a result, I have allotted some time during class for the class to check and correct their homework, and ask any questions.

Volunteer Opportunities: We could still use some more volunteers for the Northwest Fur Post Field Trip on April 20th, and the Math Extravaganza on Thursday of this week. Please let me know if you would be willing to join us for one or both of those days.

Social Studies: Students have completed their explorer research and we will soon put together our information for our final project for the unit. If you haven't already, please ask your student who they conducted research on, and what they learned.

Writing: In class today, we discussed the importance of not only getting creative ideas down on paper, but also using proper sentence structure and punctuation. From now on I told them I will place a greater emphasis on the mechanics of their writing during weekly writing assignments. It's always a good idea to remind your son or daughter to check their work by re-reading it before turning it in.

As always, please let me know if you have questions or comments.

Thanks,
Mr. Norman

Late Monday Update

Hello Families,

Here is an update of what we have been up lately, and a preview of some upcoming events.

Math: This week we have started to skip around a little in our math units in preparation for the upcoming MCA and MAP Tests. This is designed to more effectively spend our time to cover material that will be on those tests at the fifth grade level. We have taken a break from Unit 7, and started a section of Unit 9 today that centers around graphing coordinates. Students have been told to hang on to their Unit 7 Study Links, and that we will be returning to this unit in the future.

Social Studies: Students have learned some of the basics of European exploration from 1000 A.D. to 1900, and later this week will conduct their own research of explorers past and present. Please ask them what they have learned.

Emotions and Growing Up Units:  We will begin our conversations about 'Those Crazy Mixed-Up Emotions today.' Students will receive some parent-child homework assignments during these upcoming units.  These are meant to open the door to some very important conversations between you and your child.  I hope you will embrace them as an opportunity to help your children build some life-long skills, as well as to open up conversations for them to learn what you value and expect of them.  Look for an invitation to view curriculum materials for the Growing Up Unit in next week's Brimhall Folders.

•Field Trip to Northwest Fur Trading Post: On April 20, fifth graders will be taking a bus to the Northwest Fur Trading Post in Pine City.  We need as many volunteers as possible to make this field trip a success.  It's a well-led tour where kids will experience a living history museum and be invited to participate outside and inside, getting to experience what it was like for the early Minnesota Native Americans who lived and traded with the European fur traders along the Snake River.   With our current weather, this promises to be a great end to a week of testing.  Please consider joining us.  You should receive information in this weeks Wednesday's (March 28) Brimhall Folder.

Math Extravaganza Volunteers Needed: One of our fifth grade celebrations is fast approaching! On Thursday, April 5th, fifth graders will gather in classrooms and the multi-purpose room to play a variety of math games from our curriculum. We need parent volunteers who would be willing to learn one of the games and be a host at one of our stations. I'll send a game packet home with your child ahead of time, so that you can play the game together and become familiar with materials, rules, etc. Then, on April 5th, we'll have everything you need packaged in baggies for you to hand out to those who have signed up for your sessions. Kids will have signed up ahead of time for all three sessions, so all you need to do is start them off and monitor. Treats will be served during the second session. I was told this was a big hit last year, and a great time for kids to review lots of skills before the testing season starts.

•MCA testing and MAP testing:  Our class will be taking the MCA Math Tests on April 23 and 24, which is a Monday and Tuesday.  When final days are assigned for science and reading, I will be emailing you our class testing times.  Please keep your children on healthy sleep schedules at all times, but especially during the next few months.  Lots of sleep, exercise, and healthy breakfasts are the best preparation for these days. MAP tests will be administered in May.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.  I hope you can join us for the Math Extravaganza, the NorthWest Fur Post field trip, or even both.

Thanks,
Mr. Norman

Spring Break Update

Hello Families,

Just a few quick notes for the week off of school....

Math: Your students took their Unit 6 test this past week, and will get them back for corrections and a parent signature after break.

Writing: I was impressed by the class' work on their Descriptive Essays. After break, I will sit down with each student and go through their writing with them, and they will be able to bring home their work. Please have them read their essays to you.

On Wednesday, your 5th grader brought home the Parent Bulletins for our next two Health Units. After spring break, we will be teaching the Units entitled "Those Crazy Mixed-Up Emotions" and "Growing Up." Both are excellent introductions to puberty and the changes kids go through as they reach adolescence. You will receive an additional letter after Spring Break about our "Growing Up" unit, and are always invited to view curriculum in our school library.

As we are getting toward the end of the year, our classroom supply of certain items has been diminished. If any of you are looking for a way to support your students in school in a very basic way, our class could use some donations.
Things we are out of or running low on: boxes of kleenex, and 'Clorox' wipes...(also check with your students about their personal supplies like whiteboard markers, pencils, etc.)

Thanks again for all of your support, and I hope you have a great Spring Break!

Mr. Norman

FONTS and fonts

I am really not sure why some of these paragraphs below are smaller than others. They sure didn't look like that when I made the post. Oh well....hopefully you can still read it.

Update

Hello Families,

Thank you to all of you for attending your child's conference within the past two weeks!  It is always a pleasure to meet with kids and their families.  My hope is that you find these conferences helpful and positive, and that your child can celebrate with you all of the ways they've grown and set goals for the rest of the year.

We are almost to Spring Break! It is amazing how this year has flown by already. I am really looking forward to a great spring. Thank you for all you do to support your students. As I have seen your children grow as students and individuals, I really feel lucky to have such a great group this year.

Here are a few updates....

Math: Students will take their Unit 6 Test on Tuesday. Over the weekend, students had a vocabulary sheet to complete for Monday, as a part of our unit review. We will likely wait to start a Unit 7 until after spring break.

Title 1 Survey: We would still appreciate if you could complete our school's Title 1 survey if you didn't get a chance to at conferences. It takes less than five minutes.  You can get to it by going to the Brimhall main page and clicking on the School Wide Title One Survey. This survey will be active until spring break. If you have specific questions about the survey, I will be happy to connect you with Ms. Melanie Groth.

Social Studies: We have started our "Explorers Unit," where we will examine some of the first explorers of the world up to some explorers of more recent times. Your students have been first gaining a spatial and relational understanding of where the continents and oceans are in the world. I think this has been very valuable as I have noticed most young people do not have much previous knowledge of where things are in the world.

Writing: We have come to end of a long process for our "Descriptive Writing Essay." I have been impressed with the level of quality that I have seen students' writing so far. While much of this has been conducted in class, we are the point now where we need to move to the next writing project. Some of your students who are not finished with writing or typing will need to find time outside of class to complete it.

College Week: Throughout the next four days, we will take a look at the 'places' a college education can take you. We will have a few in-class activities and students will be asked to conduct a very short interview with someone (family member, family friend, or teacher)  who has attended or is attending college. Students will get this assignment on Monday, and it will be due on Thursday, March 8, before Spring Break.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks again,
Mr. Norman

Sunday Update

Hello Families,

Thank you to those who have already come for their parent-teacher conferences. I find it reinvigorating to have those conversations about your student's accomplishments, as well as topics that need more focus for the rest of the year. I look forward to meeting with the rest of you this Tuesday night.

Math: We are getting close to the end of Unit 6, and will be likely taking the test at the end of the upcoming week. Please assist your student in any way possible at home, and remind them to come in with questions if there are concepts they have not mastered yet. The end of the unit centers on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators.

Writing: Your son or daughter should have written in their planner this Friday that they need to have their Third Draft of their descriptive essay completed. I know that some students have some work they need to finish on this. Through this intensive writing process they will learn the benefit of revising and editing to show significant changes and growth from their rough draft to the final copy.

Student Leaving: We had an unfortunate loss to our class as one of our student's family moved back to their home country after a parent finished a doctoral program at a local university. I was very proud and impressed with the compassion and understanding that the class displayed on this student's last day. Please ask your student to explain more.

Door Contest: As a part of I Love to Read Month, Brimhall is having a "Decorate Your Door Contest." The class elected to use the book "Holes" as our theme. A group of students was drawn to complete the task, but as time constraints became pressing, the whole class was able to pitch in to get it done on time. The next time you are in the school, please take a look at our "Holes" display as well as the other finely decorated doors throughout the school.

Enough for now, as always let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks,
Mr. Norman

Monday Update

Sorry parents, I was out of town this weekend, and didn't get a chance to write a post yesterday.

Hopefully, you saw my email about Parent-Teacher conferences. Please let me know if you cannot meet at the time you selected or the one I selected for you. I look forward to sharing your son or daughter's hard work from this past trimester, his or her growth since the beginning of the year and some goals for the end of 5th grade.

Writing: We have been working hard on the writing process. I have been impressed with the class' skill and care, when editing and revising their work. I have tried to push the idea that writing is not perfected after the first draft. Taking the time to carefully analyze and alter their writing is a craft that will serve them will as they progress on in school. We will continue the writing process this week and hopefully type the final drafts soon.

Math: Unit 6 has provided opportunities to collect, organize and analyze data. Students collected information about their classmates, and then calculated the results. Their work will be showcased in the hallway above our jacket hooks. Please take a look and ask your student about their survey.

Social Studies: I am hoping that in the coming short week, we will get started with the Explorers Unit. This has typically been a popular unit among students, and I am looking forward to see the work students will complete as they learn about the origins of how our world was first explored by the western world. We will discuss these explorers accomplishments, as well as some of the negative effects they had on the people and places they explored.

Let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Thanks,
Mr. Norman

Sunday Update

Hello Families,

I hope all of you are having an enjoyable weekend....Here are a few updates.

Math: Students received their Unit 5 Test back in class on Friday. They should have brought them home to make corrections and have a parent sign the cover sheet. If your student is still having trouble understanding how to fix their mistakes, have them come to me with questions, and I can find a time to go over it with them.

Writing: Your students should be working on writing the body paragraphs of their descriptive essay. They are writing it about either a person, place or thing that is important to them. This week will write the conclusion paragraph, and transition into the editing/revising stage of the writing process. Please ask your 5th grader what they chose to write about, and lend them any ideas you might have for their writing.

Health: We started a new health unit about the Respiratory System, where students will learn how to keep their lungs in top working condition.

**Just a reminder that students will have February 20th and 21st off of school. Also, Winter Conferences start that week and are on Feb. 21st, 23rd and then the next week on the 28th. I will send home a conference reminder slip this week.

As always, let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks,
Mr. Norman

Hey, it's a Saturday Update!

Hello Everyone,

Because of previous plans for tomorrow's Super Bowl, I am posting an update a day earlier.

A big thank you to all of the chaperones who came to the Minneapolis Institute of Art yesterday! Your participation allowed students to be in much smaller groups and therefore, see much more of the museum than they would have otherwise. It made the trip much more enjoyable and educational for the class!

Writing: Your student has a homework assignment over the weekend to complete the beginning paragraph of their descriptive essay. They are writing about either a person, place or thing that is important to them. For the beginning paragraph, we practiced making a connection with the reader to introduce your topic. Please lend your student any assistance here coming up with ideas.

Math: We took the Unit 5 Math Test on Thursday. I am in the process of grading them now, and students should receive them back to make corrections and get a parent's signature before the end of next week. You can expect to see your student bring home a new Unit 6 parent letter and answer key, and we will soon start working on Unit 6, which centers around Data Analysis and Adding/Subtracting Fractions. If your student is having trouble with homework, I would encourage them to bring home their Student Math Journal, which we use for classroom learning. But, it may remind them of the process/skill we learned during class that they can apply to their homework. If they bring it home, it would then be very important to remember to bring it back to class the next day.

Social Studies: All but two groups have given their Native American Power Point presentations. I have been impressed with the level of information they collected and with the quality of their power point work. Please ask your student about what slides he or she presented as a part of their team.

Spelling: There will be a spelling test given on Monday. Students will get a new list on Friday.

**Teacher Apology**   After reading last week's post, I realized I made a few typos resulting in grammatical errors. I apparently was not being a good role model, as I have stressed to your students, the importance of proofreading assignments that they are turning in, to make sure their sentences make sense. I guess I need to take my own advice. Thanks for understanding (haha).

Thanks,
Mr. Norman

Sunday Update

Hello 5th Grade Families,

Here is what's happening....

Field Trip:  We will be going to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, with our art teacher, Mr. Moore, in the afternoon on Friday. Thank you to the parents who have volunteer to chaperone. I will be in contact with you about the specifics of the day.

Conferences: There are sign-up sheets in the main entrance to the building. Please let me know if you cannot make one of those three days and we can figure out something else.

Math: We are getting close to the end of Unit 5, and will be taking the test this week, most likely on Thursday. Students will be reviewing and practicing during class, but you should expect them to be completing review work at home before the test, in lieu of study links.

Social Studies: Student groups will begin presenting their PowerPoint presentations this week. They have been working hard and I am excited to see the final products.

Writing: We have taken the time to do a few grammar mini-lessons in preparation for a longer writing unit. Very soon, we will begin the writing process for our descriptive essay. This will be the largest piece of writing that your students will have done so far this year, and I am really looking forward to it. I have seen strong writing ability in this group, and this will be a great opportunity to showcase their talents. More to come on this....

That's enough for now. As always, let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks,
Mr. Norman

Sunday Update

Hello Families,

A few updates....

Conferences: They are coming up for the middle of February, which is a little far off, but we have sign up sheets in the main entrance to school if you would like sign up for a specific time.

Math: We are continuing our unit on Fractions, which delves into Percent equivalents as well. We had a basketball shooting percentage demonstration in class on Friday, where students measured a shooter's percentage. Please ask your students about percent and have them explain how they calculated it.

Social Studies: We have taken a small break from Guided Reading to fit in some more computer time to work on our Native American power point presentations. All of the students are showing strong skills using this element of technology. Please lend any hints or expertise that you might have for them to share with their group.

Health: Students have been learning about making healthy eating choices. While discussing the nutrients that their bodies need to be healthy, we have also learned about common eating habits that can have lasting negative effects. Students should be studying for their quiz on Monday. This topic provides an easy opportunity to talk with your son or daughter about what they can do to make the right food choices.

Taking work home:  We have spoken at length in class about how they can keep you involved and informed about their work in school. Part of that discussion has surrounded showing you the graded assignments that I have given back to them. Your students should be periodically showing you work that I have returned to them, please remind them if necessary.

As always, please let me know if you have questions or concerns.

Late Weekend Update

Hi Families,

Sorry I didn't update yesterday, I became busy with some other activities this past weekend.

MLK Day: On Friday, we took the opportunity to have an important discussion surrounding the impact of Martin Luther King Jr.'s work on our world today. Students viewed a short video and discussed their own experiences. We will continue this discussion early this week.

Math: We will be continuing with Unit 5 this week, which is a longer unit than most. Centering mostly around fractions, I believe this unit is very important for your student to grasp so they can build on their knowledge going forward. Please monitor and assist their Study Links work at home, and remind them to come back to school with questions, should something not quite make sense to them. Also, please ask your student how they are progressing with mastering their math facts. We will continue to take a weekly timed test, where students pick the set of facts they need to check off their list.

Social Studies: Hopefully, your students have told you about the research they conducted about their tribe. In the coming week, they will start to put together a power point presentation on the computer that they will present to the class.

Writing: Since we returned to school after winter break, I have been stressing the importance of building on their writing skills through a weekly writing prompt each week. Last week, students wrote about "The Best Meal" that they ever ate. Students should get their paragraphs back Tuesday and can bring them home to share with you. With this type of assignment, I am having them focus on the important details of the writing process including basic punctuation, using descriptive language, and reading their own writing to make sure it sounds like what they meant to say. They will get weekly practice with these skills, and soon will be writing their first descriptive essay.

That's enough for now. As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks,
Mr. Norman

Sunday Update 1/8

Hello Families,

We had a good week getting back into the swing of things. I look forward to your students really hitting their stride and having a great rest of the school year.

MAP Tests:  We took our Reading MAP Test last Thursday, and will be taking the Math portion this upcoming Friday. Make sure your students get a good nights sleep and are well rested.

Spelling: Your students will get a new list on Monday, that they will be tested on the following week, after MAP Testing is concluded.

Math: We have gotten off to a slow start on Unit 5 (Fractions). I look for us to make some more headway here in the coming week. Your students should make sure they keep up with their Study Links on a nightly basis. It is important for them to practice the skills we have learned during the day, at home that very night to reinforce their knowledge.

Literacy: We will be getting back into the Daybook as a resource for learning about Determining Importance. Mrs. Holty (my team teacher during Literacy) and I will have students practicing how to disseminate the most important parts of what they are reading.

Social Studies: Students have been put in groups and conducted research. In the coming week, they will start putting together presentations for their tribe. Eventually, each student will be responsible for summarizing their groups research in a given area, and developing power point slide to present their findings.

Health: Our new health unit is all about Nutrition and making important choices about what they eat. Please ask your student about what they have learned, and add any knowledge that you have on the topic.

Please let me know if you have questions or concerns.

Thanks,
Mr. Norman

Sunday Update 1/1/12

Happy New Year!

I hope you all had a wonderful winter break. As you get ready to get back into school schedule in a couple of days, I thought I would write a quick update.

MAP Testing: Not great timing, I know, but we are scheduled to take our winter MAP(Measure of Academic Progress) tests in math and reading in the first two weeks of January. We use these tests among other data to determine how to best help your student learn. While these tests matter and should be taken seriously, it is important to keep them in perspective. They are only a small snapshot of your students abilities, and should be viewed as such.

MAP Schedule:
Reading Test - Thursday, Jan. 5th
Math Test - Friday, Jan. 13th

Math: Students took their Unit 4 Math Tests the week before break started and will receive them back on Tuesday. They will have until Friday to make necessary corrections, and to have a parent/guardian sign the cover sheet. We will start Unit 5 focusing on Fractions in the next week.

Social Studies: We have started some preliminary exploration into our Native American Unit, and students will be assigned to groups and conducting research in the coming week. Please ask your student what they are learning about as they dig into the culture and history of their tribe.

That's enough for now, please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Enjoy the last days of break!
Mr. Norman
